Day 53 (Wednesday)

It must be Spring! K the new cleaner came today and did such a fabulous job it's all we can do not to wander around Latimers doing the "white glove test". I know you only see that in movies now but I think it would be a suitable testament to the work K has done here to do it and report the results back to her. S said that she (K) had wanted to do a good job for me because I was "assertive" - or perhaps those two things were not supposed to go together. In any case, she did a fabulous job and we are definitely planning to have her back ... in a fortnight ... so as not to interfere with J's scheduled cleans. S did say that K was "on steroids" and that it had rubbed off on her (S) and she spent the three hours that K was here doing her own outside chores including pressure-cleaning the back area. It looks fantastic! And the front area! Ditto! The vegetable garden should be on notice that it's due for a thorough weeding tomorrow. I meant to mention the other day that S had also dragged out the stream mop and done our room. Yep, <looks at watch> Spring. I have been no slouch either ... hence the half a clear desk I now have. The only reason that all of it isn't clear is that I not yet liberated my filing cabinet from the shed. I did try one day but ... no, no, there will be no excuses. I just didn't do it yet (but I have been doing loads of other stuff).

We passed on the Dam barbecue tonight which is a shame because S was already out of her MWC by the time I arrived home. Alas, I didn't feel like a barbie - the real reason we were going ... we figured you wouldn't be able to see much of the construction site and progress in the dark - although didn't the bar person at the local say they worked under lights throughout the night? In any case, it was much nicer doing Skype talk with the traveller instead - although it wasn't easy talking around my mouth ulcer (why a barbie and chat wasn't at the top of my "to do" list this evening!).

Election Decision Day Plus One ... and already the Liberal folk have started taking "shots" at Miss JG. So much for the "gentler" Parliament Tony Abbott promised only a week ago. I can't help but think those independents must be even happier with their choice now. It's hard to credit the media spin on yesterday's event - even down to publishing photographs of the manilla folder one of the independents was carrying when he walked out of the deliberation room - where key words (which later appeared in his press conference speech) are clearly visible and legible. Really ... it's a bit like those reports in the Cold War where it was said that the Americans had such high-powered satellite technology they could read a Russian newspaper from space. That may well have been the case, but it doesn't matter if you can't read the language or don't understand what it means - or it takes you three days to work out the Russian President is dead.

Work has begun in earnest in putting the sculpture pieces in place for the Swell Festival which starts on Friday. Not to pre-empt the works, but I think that the piece entitled "The Race" could easily have been called "Bronze Aussies". But this is probably why they don't let me name things. Hopefully the weather will turn a little better for them ... at this point all the pics I've seen have the sculptures set against the backdrop of grey skies.

There has been a breakthrough on the Nerang KFC robbery case ... police have advised the scooter was orange and blue not pink and black as previously reported. And was this quote intentional? "We hope she (the eight year old girl caught up in the robbery) can come out of this not scared for life". In may have been they meant "scarred" but either seems to work.

The other reason we suspect it is Spring is because the grapevine has new growth and we've started clipping the tendrils to the trellis so they don't get accidentally broken. All that helping Ben in the vineyard is certainly starting to pay off - an added bonus because it was fantastic at the time as well. It was there that we truly saw The Milky Way for the first time - looking up into that clear Orange sky - through the big bay windows as we lay in bed!

Cat wrangling was not the way we had hoped to finish the evening but they had their own ideas. They were in and out like we had a revolving door instead of a cat flap and no sooner would one go out that another one wanted to come in and vice versa. Could this have anything to do with those big brown frogs (I don't think they were cane toads)? Even Pearl went out at one stage and disappeared around the back and only came back after I switched to my deeper "do it now" voice (incredibly this only works sometimes). So at bedtime no-one was in and they only deigned to come in - singly over the next half hour or so - when we'd given them "one last chance" far too many times. This to me is proof that they cannot multi-task ... frog, frog, frog, what's that whistling noise, frog frog, frog, was that my name, frog, frog, frog, I'm a bit peckish but can't eat frog, frog, frog ... of course, it's equally possible that they were just ignoring us until they were ready. It will (okay "may") be different tomorrow.
