Wednesday

ANZAC Day. We did spare a moment to think of the men and women who have gone to war in the name of peace - and wondered if the powers that be would ever find another way to do war which didn't mean that people lost their lives. As we had our breakfast, we listened to the radio and a piece about a young soldier writing home to his loved ones from the First World War to tell them he had shot his first German. She wrote back to say she would rather not hear about that, so he started writing about the landscape instead. How hard it must have been for the soldiers - to be in a life and death situation and not be able to share it with the ones they were doing it for.

The Big House held a lunch today and M took Mouse. All the attendees received a ANZAC badge as a tangible reminder of the sacrifices made over the years. The meal itself was wonderful - with great choices, and figs!

S and I had a quiet day in with the furries and the only time I left Latimers was to drive up to the road to investigate smoke S had seen. It turned out to be a controlled bonfire (like the ones B sets down the back of Latimers) and not a threat to houses or other property. It is amazing how deceptive distance can be though, because it really did look as though the fire was on the lane.

M arrived home not long after - bearing very wonderful and much-appreciated cups of coffee.
